#CustomerSpotlight - Jan Christian

This week we spotlight longtime RGG EDU customer, Jan Christian, one of our biggest supporters having bought 8 tutorials in the last two years. Jan is not a full-time working pro yet, but you wouldn't know that by looking at his work. His passion for photography sprouted about a decade back at the beginning of the digital boom. However, things didn't get serious with portraiture until he got his first flash kit from Jinbei in 2014.

The featured "Milk Dress" photo above was something Jan was itching to create before he bought his flashes. In order to create the milk-dress photo he needed three things:

  1. A model able to pose for 2-3 hours and willing to get wet with cold milk
  2. Short Flash Duration
  3. The liquid to be tossed on the model

Unfortunately, the Jinbei kit wasn't up to the task needed to properly execute his idea due to it's longer flash duration, so things had to wait. In 2015, he upgraded to a Broncolor system and was ready to rock. For the liquids, Jan used a combination of equal parts finger paint, milk, and warm water. For his lighting setup, he used a Para 133 for the main and two 40x180cm strips on the sides. He "Dexter" lined his workspace (shown below) to help contain the liquids and the rest is history.

500 splashes later, things were ready for post. Jan admits he wasn't the best at Photoshop, but as with everything, you get better with practice. Special thanks to Jan for sharing his images and his process. If you want to find out more about Jan, follow him on Instagram @JanChristianZimara.
