First Footage Thoughts
Overall these are a great option for our crew to take BTS and create high quality motion graphics assets for our intro and outdo videos. We may even explore getting lenses for these and begin doing interviews with off camera audio. The footage holds up decently well in post production and can take an extra 1-2 stops of boost in the shadows as long as the highlights are protected and not blown out.
We have barely scraped the surface in terms of quality and want to be clear that this is not a full review, just initial thoughts on the footage on day 1. One of the biggest disappointments is the lack of slo mo footage at 240 fps at quality above 720p, and also the time-lapse feature only creating videos in 1080p. The camera is definitely capable of creating a 4k quality time-lapse but somehow fails to offer that. We are hoping Hyperlapse comes out with this feature soon, but at the time of this publication it does not.
Dynamic Range Test | Auto Exposure Preview
With this video we wanted to test the auto exposure adjustments and see how well the phone could transition from highlights to darker shaded areas. Overall the camera has a pretty quick ability to set a great overall exposure while protecting the highlights and giving a nice even color in mixed rooms with ambient light and artificial color temperatures. Of course in most settings we would add the exposure lock to ensure we created an even explore though our clip. It's nice to have either option, though.
In addition we also wanted to test this footage handheld and see what results we could get. Often times you only have your camera and your hands so it's nice to see what options filmmakers have to hold the camera handheld. In the video we moved constantly but feel the final result wasn't too too jarring to watch. This means with more planning and potentially some better grip gear we can get super smooth movements and hand held shots with this tiny device.
We look forward to incorporating these phones into our camera bags and pushing them to the limits!
